Job Description


The Paralegal/Legal Assistant will provide support to General Counsel and the Legal Staff Attorneys by conducting research, reviewing and organizing files, preparing evaluations, documents and assigned tasks. The paralegal will also handle certain legal projects on an independent basis. CONTACTS: INTERNAL:Legal Department; other Company managers and personnel as necessary to complete projects assigned EXTERNAL:Regulatory agencies, clients, customers, outside counsel

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Investigates complaints sent to Company by various regulatory authorities and prepares appropriate responses.
  • Processes requests for subservicing transactions (such as partial releases, condominium amendments, mortgage subordinations, condemnations) for which the Legal Department is responsible, completes the necessary review and documentation, and coordinates the completion of these transactions with Client representatives when necessary.
  • Review and respond to Customer Service and Research inquiries and requests for assistance.
  • Responding to records subpoena requests.
  • Processes responses to subpoenas issued to the Company.
  • Assists General Counsel and Attorneys in litigation, particularly in the assembly and review of factual material needed to assess the merits of the case.
  • Work closely with top executive officers and board of directors.
  • Filing corporate annual reports for company.
  • Preparation and delivery of applications, renewals, and periodic reports necessary to maintain the corporate good standing and loan origination or servicing licenses of the Company and its affiliates.
  • Obtaining, maintaining and renewing company licenses on a National level.
  • Provides assistance to Special Loans and Escrow in connection with curtailment modifications, trust transfers, co-op transactions, and “New York” assignments previously assigned to the Legal Department.
  • Perform such other responsibilities and duties assigned by General Counsel or Staff Attorneys.

Job Requirements

Job requirements:

  • High school diploma required, college degree and/or paralegal certification preferred
  • Two to four years of experience in l office or corporate legal department with concentration in real estate practice, title insurance company, or consumer finance environment.
  • Mortgage servicing experience preferred and related software and proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Experience in dealing with state and government regulatory agencies in connection with audits.
  • Mortgage servicing or regulatory compliance experience; ability to conduct legal research.
  • Experience with obtaining, maintaining and renewing company licenses on a National level.
  • Experience working closely with top executive officers and board of directors.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite; proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet programs; excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interact positively with customers, clients, investors, regulatory agencies, and other Company staff; excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • ability to work with minimal supervision; willingness to work overtime as needs of projects dictate; ability to maintain records and files and to follow Legal Department procedures for project tracking.
